Prelate Dr. Karl Jüsten

Prelate Dr. Karl Jüsten (*7.9.1961) is Head of the Commissariat of the German Bishops - Catholic Office in Berlin.
He received his doctorate in 1999 with a thesis on "Ethics and Ethos in Democracy" after studying Catholic theology in Freiburg, Innsbruck and Bonn. Ordained a priest in 1987, Jüsten served as chaplain in two Cologne parishes until 1990, prefect of the Cologne archbishop's seminary until 1994, and then pastor in Euskirchen. From 1996 to 2000, he was deputy director of the Department for Pastoral Personnel in the Archdiocese of Cologne.
Since then, Jüsten has headed the Commissariat of the German Bishops in Berlin, the liaison office of the German Bishops' Conference to the organs of the German government and the European Union.
He holds various positions in church development cooperation, including chairman of the Catholic Central Office for Development Aid and co-chairman of the Joint Conference on Church and Development. He is also a member of several advisory and supervisory boards.
Prelate Dr. Karl Jüsten was unanimously re-elected as Chairman of the Broadcasting Council in March 2019. Jüsten has been serving on the DW Broadcasting Council since 2002 and has chaired it since 2014.
